Legal Service Plans: Prepaid legal services for family and business for pennies per day
Legal Service Plans have been around for over 30 years. You may have heard them referred to as prepaid legal services, prepaid lawyer, prepaid legal plans, or simply prepaid legal or legal plans.
I have been personally involved in this industry for over three years and have seen the demand for legal service plans grow dramatically.
What a legal service plan does is to ensure that you have legal protection and legal consultation in every area of your life - personally, professionally and financially. And they do it all for a small monthly fee.
I will say right now that if you have the time, you can learn close to as much about any legal situation as an attorney would know without spending $200-$300 per hour. There are just two problems with this. Who has that much time to invest, and who has the resources that it would take to learn all the case history that is involved in the legal system?
That's why there is this "Legal revolution" going on - to provide the average everyday family or business owner with equal access to the legal system. Up until very recently, it just did not make sense to pay an attorney $100 or more to review an legal contract before your leased or purchased a car, or joined a health club, or refinanced your home.
What a prepaid legal plan does is allow you the opportunity, if you so choose, to have this "luxury" available to protect you from a potential financially harmful situation.
What do you think wealthy people say when someone asks them to sign a contract? "Let my attorney review it first".
How do you think it would feel the next time you're having a contractor work on your home, or buying a home or a car to say, "Everything looks great, but I need to have my attorney look over the details first"?
Who's in charge in that situation? It's not the dealership, or realtor or bank, that's for sure. It's your turn to be in charge for a change.

In a matter of just a few minutes, you will have a very good overview of the protection offered through a pre-paid legal plan and if you think it would work for you.
The same holds true when you're being treated unfairly or someone's not honoring their part of an agreement or contract. Just imagine being able to say, "You need to make this right or I'm going to contact my attorney." and mean it too.
I have been a member of the largest and well known legal service plan providers for over three years and I had that exact situation about a year into my membership.
About a year and a half earlier, I had agreed to purchase two new cell phones from the local phone company. They, in turn, were to credit me $50 per phone on my bill right away and then $25 per phone once they received my old phones.
To make a long story less long, it took me about four months to see the first credit of $100 ($50 per phone), and the second credit never came. I made a few phone calls and left messages for people but never heard back. I spoke to the customer service people and told them that a $50 balance was in dispute and I refused to pay it. So every month, our phone bill was showing that we were $50 behind.
Finally, my wife told me to call the "prepaid lawyer" so I did. Before that I felt that I was too busy to mess with a $50 issue. But I called the Law firm her in Colorado and the attorney was very friendly. He gave me some advise and said that if this didn't work, he'd send a letter for me. Well, it didn't. So he sent a letter to the phone company.
Within two weeks of the phone company telling me they couldn't help me, I received a call from them and was told that they had researched my account and credited me $50 on my next bill.
Now there is no way that I ever would have been able to do this without my prepaid legal service plan. But this is just one very small story of the ways a legal service plan can help. Over the years, I've probably either saved or got back over a thousand dollars as a direct result of prepaid legal service plan.
I know I've saved hundreds of dollars on the traffic ticket representation alone. You see, sometimes I drive a bit too fast. Now I'm not saying that a legal service plan can fix your tickets, and I'm certainly not suggesting that you break the law. However, when you see those flashing red and blue lights in your review mirror, it feels good to know that you have a prepaid legal plan.
This part of the service is invaluable to a family that has teenaged drivers. Most of the legal plans cover your whole family for one small monthly fee, and if you happen to find one that doesn't, don't get it! Here's a story of a friend of mine who has a sixteen year old daughter and how he benefited from his legal service plan.
About tree weeks after getting his membership in place, Gary's sixteen year old daughter received a traffic ticket. Gary immediately contacted the law firm and the attorney told him not to worry and that they should be able to get the ticket reduced to a non-moving traffic violation. The attorney then rescheduled a court date.
While they were waiting for the court date, his daughter wasn't paying attention and rear ended someone at a stop light.
The attorney went to court on the first ticket and was able to get a non-moving violation,so there was only one point against her. He then went to court on the 2nd ticket and was able to get this reduced to a 2 point ticket as long as she agreed to take a driving course.
Gary's prepaid attorney saved him hundreds of dollars a year in car insurance.
Most prepaid legal plans offer a variety of services:
Preventative Services -
Will Preparation
Automobile Protection (tickets/accidents)
Law Suit Protection
IRS Help
Discounts on other services
Some legal service plans offer all of this and more, others are not so well equipped. It may also depend on the state that you live in as well. Certain states view prepaid legal plans as a form of insurance and are therefore governed by the insurance laws in that state. Sometimes the state laws can restrict the services offered.
You can check the coverage in your state offered by Prepaid Legal Services, Inc. - The leader in the leagal service plan industry - by

Another benefit of having a legal service plan is that the really good ones offer you free legal forms and a legal dictionary at no extra cost. This can be a tremendous savings if all you need is a simple bill of sale or an escrow depository agreement.

One thing that you also want to make sure is included in any legal service plan that you're looking into is nationwide protection. You do not want to be on vacation in another state with your family and have a legal issue come up only to find out that your prepaid lawyer in your home town can't help you because the law firm isn't licensed in that state! Make sure you have nationwide coverage.
The last area that I want to touch on is a complaint that I have heard others voice in the past. People might say that you cannot get a good, high quality law firm through a prepaid legal plan because no respectable attorney would work for that small of a price.
While this may have been true in the past, and still might be true with some legal service plans, there is one prepaid legal service plan that is always one of the top, if not the top, paying client with the major law firms they work with.
PrePaid Legal Service, Inc. is the largest legal service plan company in the country. They are also the only company in the legal service plan industry that is publicly traded (Symbol PPD).
They work with what is called a "Provider Law Firm" in most states. What this means is that all the calls in that state go into just one law firm. That hand picked law firm receives a portion of the revenue collected from all the members in that state. So if a member cancels their membership, the provider law firm loses money. Consequently, they have a strong financial incentive to do a good job for the members in their state.
Because they send so much business to one law firm, Prepaid Legal Services has tremendous leverage with that firm. The law firm can receive hundreds of thousands of dollars, in some states, millions of dollars, every month from Prepaid Legal. So collectively, Prepaid legal service clients can be the firm's number one client.
Unfortunately, there isn't enough room on this site (it is a site about mortgages after all:-) to go into full detail about all the benefits of owning a legal service plan, but you can learn more about Prepaid Legal Services, Inc., the plan that I am a member of which is the legal plan that I consider to be the Cadillac of legal service plans, by clicking on the link below and viewing the six minute video.
